We generally recommend oil-free compressors for the majority of laboratory and dental applications. The risk of oil ingress from oil compressors is normally too high for supplying gas to instrumentation, or for medical or dental systems where the air may reach the patient.

Another consideration when choosing a compressor is the duty cycle. Put simply, this is the proportion of the total time (expressed as a percentage) that the motor must run in order to fulfill the demand for air. Oil-filled compressors must never exceed a 50% duty cycle, else the motor will overheat causing internal damage that will be very expensive to rectify. Higher duty cycles also exponentially increase the amount of oil present in the output air supply.

Even with oil-free compressors, there is a wide range of allowable duty cycles. Cheap compressors from tool stores and the like usually have duty cycles of 20-25%. Budget compressors often state duty cycles of 50%, and the quality models will allow a 100% duty cycle!

What this means in practice is that a quality compressor usually represents a better investment in the long-run, in terms of the size and initial cost of the unit that you require, as well as the improved reliability and longer asset-life that you can expect.
